چکیده

In recent years it has become evident that many marine invertebrates are sensitive to changes in hydrostatic pressure, and the subject has recently been reviewed by Knight-Jones & Morgan (1966). Most are planktonic forms, and their responses appear to be of a depth-regulatory nature (Baylor & Smith, 1957; Moore & Corwin, 1956). However, a few normally benthic types have also been shown to be pressure-sensitive, notably the amphipods SyncheUdium (Enright, 1962) and Corophium (Morgan, 1965) and the polychaete worm Nephtys (Qasim & Knight-Jones, 1957). The latter is habitually a burrowing form which rarely leaves the sand, but when kept in glassbottomed vessels without sand it frequently exhibits spontaneous swimming movements with the ventral side kept in contact with the bottom (Clark, 1956; Clark & Clark, i960; Mettam, 1967). When subjected to alternate minutes at atmospheric pressure, and at a pressure of 1000 mb. above atmospheric, the swimming excursions occurred more frequently during the minutes of high pressure (Knight-Jones & Morgan, 1966). Worms which were still swimming when the pressure was decreased stopped immediately following the pressure change. However, the parameters of these responses were still incompletely known, and thus a more detailed investigation seemed justified.

The Possible Role of the Supra - Oesophageal Ganglion in the Responses of Nephtys ( Polychaeta , Annelida ) to Changes in Hydrostatic Pressure

INTRODUCTION The periodic swimming behaviour shown by the burrowing polychaete Nephtys, when denied access to sand, is readily modified by changes in hydrostatic pressure. An increase in pressure stimulates the worm to swim, while a decrease in pressure inhibits swimming, and some of the parameters of these responses have been described previously (Morgan, 1969). However, nothing is known of th...

Identification key to Nephtyidae (Annelida) of the Sea of Okhotsk

Currently, 15 species of Nephtyidae (Annelida) are known from the Sea of Okhotsk (north-western Pacific). A new user-friendly identification key is presented with a brief description for each species. The taxonomic positions of three closely related species, Nephtys brachycephala Moore, 1903, N. schmitti Hartman, 1938 and N. paradoxa Malm, 1874, are revised. The distributions of two species, Ne...

P-28: Hydrostatic Pressure Induced Cell Deathin Cumulus Cells and Improved In vitro Maturationof Oocytes from Preovulatory Follicles

Background: Cryopreservation of ovaries is an important technique in assisted reproduction technology. Physical forces like hydrostatic pressure have a pivotal role in reproduction systems. Due to changes in intrafollicular pressure during ovulatory process, this study designed to examine the effects of hydrostatic pressure on oocyte maturation and cell death in cumulus cells from cryopreserved...
